Lorry drivers at Hull, Immingham and Killingholme ports are being asked to help police with their crackdown on organised crime and terrorism.

Humberside Police has asked drivers making their way through docks at the river Humber to report any activity which raises suspicion, the BBC reports.

Counter Terrorism Units, the UK Border Force and port owners are taking part in the initiative, called Project Yali, while shipping firms will also join the operation.

Fishermen and leisure sailors were asked by police in February to report suspicious activity at ports or while at sea. Project Yali follows on from this.

Earlier in September, an official from the UK Border Force claimed to have intercepted a cocaine smuggling route worth millions of pounds.

Cocaine worth about £6.5 million on the street was seized from docks at Immingham after being shipped from South America.

Humberside Police's Supt Tracey Bradley said: "The volume of traffic using the Humber ports on a daily basis is phenomenal and we believe that closer working with our partners in the transport business is essential to reduce the risk from terrorism and organised crime."
