Captain - Ian Ashbee

Profile

Inspirational captain Ian Ashbee joined Hull City Football Club in June 2002, which makes him the longest serving player in the current Tigers squad.

After signing his initial 3 year-deal with the Tigers, 'Ash' was sent-off in his City debut against Southend United at Boothferry Park having received two yellow cards. This was to be an indication of his combative instincts as the Tigers' midfield general proved to be a reassuring presence in their Third Division battles.

A spectacular volleyed goal in a 4-1 win at Torquay in Peter Taylor's first game as Manager was duly voted the Goal of the 2002-03 season, but after suffering torn ankle ligaments in March he missed the closing stages of the campaign.

It was fitting that his 25-yard curler into the top corner at Yeovil was to confirm the Tigers first promotion success in 19 years. For his wholehearted contribution throughout a memorable 2003-04 campaign, that wonder strike has deservedly passed into the club's folklore.

The following season he went on to confirm his name in the club's history books as - in the club's centenary season, he became the first player to captain City to two consecutive promotion campaigns.

Ash again skippered the Tigers in the Championship in 2005-06, however after an impressive start at the higher level, an exploratory operation at the end of August revealed a degenerative bone disease that ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

To the delight of City fans, he eventually made his return in September 2006 and to this day, continues to wear his captain's armband with passion and pride.
